Jelly Bean (4.1) is Google’s latest and greatest Android release, and while many of the newer devices will be seeing (or already have seen) an OTA update of the buttery new operating system, it now appears the Samsung Galaxy S II – an oldie but goodie – will also be treated to the tasty new firmware.
According to tech blog SamMobile, tests are currently being carried out on the S II along with its successor, the S III, and if the tests taking place wind up being successful, both the Galaxy S II and the Galaxy S III could see an update in the next couple of months.
The Korean company’s Galaxy S II has been an immensely popular device – the biggest selling, in fact, on the Android platform as a whole. Ever. Meanwhile, the S III, which is still less than two months old, looks to be following the precedent set by the S II, having already sold in excess of ten million units, which, by anybody’s reckoning, is emphatic.
The tendency of software makers is to support the newer devices on the market, mainly down to issues with time and costs. To continue supporting old hardware with new, resource-demanding features can be quite difficult, with each of the big three in the mobile game having to leave popular devices somewhat behind in order to move onwards and upwards.
Nobody would have crucified Samsung if Jelly Bean wasn’t coming to the Galaxy S II, especially since the smartphone has now been succeeded by an equally popular device, but it’s certainly good to see support being arranged for a device which is still only a year old, and if I owned one myself, I would be pretty happy with the news.
Obviously, this isn’t confirmed, and there are still the implications of testing, but otherwise, it looks as though we’ll be able to add the Galaxy S II to the growing list of devices supporting Google’s heavily lauded new firmware.
