During the WWDC keynote last month, Apple announced that Mountain Lion – the upcoming version of OS X – will be available for download for Mac users in July. And just like we had expected, the Gold Master build of said OS has just been seeded to registered users of Mac Dev Center.
Gold Master (GM) builds are near final builds of a particular software, or in this case, the OS itself. OS X Mountain Lion is the successor to the ever-famous OS X Lion and brings with it a ton of new features to OS X users.
If the need arises, Apple can push out a second GM release to developers before the final release date to make sure that all bugs and quirks are ironed out before it hits the Mac AppStore for download.
Highlighted in more detail at WWDC last month, OS X Mountain Lion brings to the table a large array of features which we’re already acquainted with on iOS, or to be more specific, on an iPad. Quickly going through some of the features of Mountain Lion; Apple is bringing iMessages, Game Center, Notes/Reminders, Facebook/Twitter integration, Voice Dictation, better iCloud support, Notification Center etc. to the Mac. These are just a few of the main features out of the couple of hundreds lying under the hood, and we are still expecting Apple to surprise us with something in the final build.
Though OS X Lion was a huge leap, with Apple brining a lot of features of the iPad to the Mac, but Mountain Lion takes a quantum leap further and and thoroughly bridges the gap between the iPad and the Mac.
OS X Mountain Lion has support for Retina graphics inside out, meaning that this release is going to be a big treat for those who own the the new MacBook Pro with Retina display.
As we mentioned at the starting of this post, the GM release of Mountain Lion is only available for Mac developers who are registered with Apple. If you are a registered developer, then simply head over to this link and get downloading.
Now that the GM release is in the hands of developers, it won’t be long till the final build is up for grabs on the Mac App Store.
We certainly can’t wait for it!
