Mac OS X Mountain Lion Release Date Rumored For July 19

According to Three Guys And A Podcast, an inside source reports that Apple will be releasing OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion on Thursday, July 19th. Their source’s credentials? A few photographs taken outside the Moscone West Convention Center where Apple held their World Wide Developers Conference.

The launch will take place about a year after OS X Lion. (Lion was released on July 20th.) Previous version updates from 10.4 Tiger to 10.7 Lion have been released every two years. Meanwhile Apple has released a new iOS version every year since the iPhone was released.

Mountain Lion will include new features such as iCloud integration, Airplay support, a NotificationCenter, a new dock, reminders, voice dictation, a new version of Safari with iCloud integration for tabs, and a power nap feature that allows for updates to be installed while the computer is sleeping (only on the second generation MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with Retina display). These are just a handful of the 200 new features included in OS X Mountain Lion.

While annual releases are great for consumers, it does mean that developers have to scramble to integrate them into their apps, and to fix any compatibility issues with the new operating system.

Apple has announced that the Mountain Lion update will cost $19.99 for a liscence that will apply to all a buyer’s personal Macs, and will be released some time next month We will see whether Apple launches the update on the 19th, or if they pick one of the other 30 days in July.
